Coombes Church - Grade I Listed

Contract Value: £135,000

Coombes Church is a simple building of two parts: the chancel at the east end and the nave to the west. The former west tower has been replaced by a small bell-turret; the roof is finished in local Horsham Stone slates.

We worked closely with the conservationist appointed to undertake heritage repair works including the bell tower, the stone roof as well as internal plaster and beam repairs. During our repairs, we had to carefully protect the church's bell, which is dated at 1100 or earlier.

Our chartered construction manager was appointed to work on East Sussex County Council's prestigious registry office, which has been a huge success hosting wedding ceremonies in the Victorian splendour of the council chamber and former mayor's parlour.

We brought a wealth of experience to this project having worked on the grade II listed Shoreham Airport and Worthing's grade II listed Dome Cinema and Worthing Pier, to mention just a few recent projects.

Key successes of the project were:

  • protecting irreplaceable features of a grade II listed building

  • securing specialist craftspeople, including lime plaster finishes

  • scaffolding the interior to reach the vaulted ceilings

  • minimising the disruption to the main town hall reception during the course of the works.
